The outlaw or rogue is usually depicted as immoral. Rogues tend to cause trouble wherever they go. If pushed, the outlaw will push back harder. They fear not having power and crave freedom. Rules do not apply to rogues - often putting themselves in trouble with the law. The nature of rogues and outlaws is to stop what isn’t functioning for them. Their rebellious behavior drives them to do things that profits them, whether it’s starting an uprising so they can steal jewels unnoticed, or seek revenge against those who have wronged them. They do this by using violence, disrupting society, and shocking people. They are often portrayed as thieves and scoundrels. Outlaws and rogues can both work with or against the hero, sometimes doing both. The rogue will commonly be shown helping the hero - at the last second - making their previous crimes look as though it’s not that bad.
Ancient Greek Rogue/Outlaw.
Hermes was the messenger God in ancient, Greece but he also was the God of thieves and liars. In fact, since he was a young boy, Hermes lied and had a serious case of kleptomania. He stole a herd of cattle when he was just a kid. He was almost labeled a cattle thief, if his father hadn’t stepped in to save his butt by making him return them. He was such a good liar, that he even helped his father, Zeus, cheat on his wife. That scoundrel!
Modern Day Rogue/Outlaw
An example of a modern day outlaw is Captain Jack Sparrow - the greatest pirate to ever live! Captain Jack Sparrow is a thief and uses others for his own personal gain. He has done everything from commandeering ships, to blowing up towns. He even condemns his friend Will Turner to 100 years of servitude on a ghost ship in order for Captain Jack to gain his freedom. That’s pretty immoral. We’ll all forgive him because he’s awesome and at the end of the day, he saves the world.
