The word scapegoat comes from a Hebrew tradition of symbolically placing the sins of the people on a goat and sending it out to die in the desert; thereby cleansing society of its sins. In modern day this is done by placing blame or misfortunes that have occurred on a single person or on a group of people. A scapegoat is often not the cause of the problem. Sometimes they are wrongly accused, or willingly accept the accusations made about them. The scapegoat is considered an outsider or a criminal.

Ancient Greece Scapegoat
In the film Troy, Paris can be seen as a scapegoat for the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. Paris may have set the war in motion when he stole Helen, but it was Agamemnon who stated that he wanted to conquer Troy prior to this event happening. Agamemnon just used Paris as an excuse to execute his ulterior motives to start a war with Troy. Meanwhile, Paris was stuck with the blame.

Modern Scape Goat
A modern day example of a Scapegoat is Batman in the film The Dark Knight. At the end of the movie Batman willingly takes the fall for being the cause of Harvey Dent's death. By taking the fall he protects Harvey Dents image as “Gotham’s true hero.” Thus reducing crime in Gotham but at the cost of making himself (Batman) appear a villain.
