The eternal child (or innocence) is a character who hasn't really lost any childish qualities or innocence and is dropped amidst the adventure the hero is experiencing. Sometimes these characters are used as comic relief in a movie/book, sometimes they're just there. Either way, they usually assist the hero a little during the journey.
