The thief is similar to the sidekick in that he or she isn't the main character. The thief is a character who isn't the protagonist, but unlike the sidekick the thief is in it purely for self gain. The thief is usually not fully on the side of the hero, similar to the antihero. In a way, the the thief is the anti-hero equivalent of the sidekick. Characters such as Robin Hood DO NOT fall under the thief archetype, despite the fact that they are thieves by trade. Thieves also usually have a rule against needless violence, but will kill far more willingly then the hero.
